Plant growth-promoting bacteria, endophytes and mycorrhizal fungi are key to sustainable agriculture, and this session at PMBWC 2027 looks at how these beneficial microbes support crop growth and resilience. Beneficial microorganisms support plant growth in several ways. Growth-promoting bacteria improve nutrient availability and produce plant hormones, endophytes living inside plant tissues help reduce stress, and mycorrhizal fungi extend the root system and improve water and nutrient uptake. These microorganisms are an important part of sustainable agriculture because they can reduce the need for chemical fertilisers and help crops grow in poor or stressed soils. Many microbial products are already on the market, but their effect can change from one field to another depending on soil type, climate, crop variety and management practices. Understanding these factors is key to improving their reliability.
This session covers the mechanisms by which these microbes benefit plants, including their role in tolerance to salinity, drought and pollutants. It also includes formulation of microbial products, field trials and the factors that affect their performance under farm conditions.
