Climate Resilient Crops and Climate Suitability Modelling

Climate-resilient crops are essential for future food production, and this PMBWC 2027 session combines crop science with climate suitability modelling to support adaptation in agriculture. Climate change is altering temperature and rainfall patterns, which affects where and how crops can be grown. Combining crop biology with climate projections helps predict future growing conditions and supports decisions on crop choice, variety selection and farm management. Many crops are already showing changes in yield, quality and growing season length as a result of rising temperatures and less predictable rainfall. Climate models combined with information on crop requirements can show which regions are likely to become more or less suitable for particular crops in the coming decades. This information is useful for farmers, breeders, researchers and policy makers planning for the future.

This session covers climate suitability modelling using current climate scenarios, adaptation of cropping systems and the development of climate-resilient varieties. Research on both major crops and minor, local or endemic species is included.

Key Topics Covered

  • Climate suitability modelling using CMIP6 scenarios
  • Impact of climate change on crop yield and quality
