Single Cell and Spatial Omics in Plants

Single-cell omics in plants is one of the fastest-growing areas of plant biology, and this PMBWC 2027 session highlights how it is reshaping our understanding of plant cells and tissues. Plant tissues are made up of many cell types, and each type responds differently during growth and under stress. Traditional methods measure gene activity across whole tissues, which hides these differences. Single-cell and spatial omics methods measure gene activity in individual cells and show where those cells are located in the tissue. Single-cell methods are helping researchers identify rare cell types, follow how cells change as they develop and find genes that act only in specific tissues. Spatial methods add information about the position of each cell, which is important for understanding how signals move through roots, leaves and flowers. These approaches are now being used in model plants as well as in crops such as maize, rice and wheat.

This session covers single-cell RNA sequencing, single-cell chromatin analysis, spatial transcriptomics and plant cell atlases. It also includes studies on cell-specific responses to the environment and the use of these methods in crop research.
