The use of chemicals for the growth of plants has many disadvantages. The biological approach for the growth of plants and crops in agriculture is eco-friendly, economical and sustainable. The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria include Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Burkholderia, Serratia, Streptomyces species. They are found near the rhizosphere region of wheat, rice, sugarcane and maize plants. The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria promote the growth of plants by direct and indirect mechanisms. These include phosphorus and potassium solubilization; production of iron chelating compounds called as siderophores; production of phytohormones, i.e., indole acetic acid and gibberellins; production of ammonia; etc. The use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria will be useful in agriculture and ultimately benefit the farmers.
